Breakdown

As of November 1st, 2019, the second trailer for The Mandalorian has 7.3 million views on YouTube. The gist of the trailer is relatively well-known. We see the Mandalorian walking past the - now quintessential - stormtrooper-helmeted heads on pikes and hear Werner Herzog’s character discuss the effectiveness of the rebellion and the Mandalorian’s prestige as a bounty hunter. We see some Trandoshans attempt to ambush the Mandalorian. After more simple dialog, the trailer kicks into high gear by showing more action sequences between the Mandalorian and some storm troopers. We see scene after scene of battle-droid warfare, space-rhino riding, gunslinging, dramatic walking shots of the Mandalorian, and a closer look at more of the major characters from the show. The trailer ends with an iconic shot of the Mandalorian with his blaster rifle raised, responding to the line, "They are waiting for you."He replies in a calm voice, "Yeah? Good."

Easter Eggs

One of the most striking features of this trailer is not the amount of easter eggs embedded in the visuals, but the types of easter eggs. This trailer contains hidden gems from almost all eras of Star Wars. The second scene shown is that of two storm troopers riding blurrgs; these creatures first appeared in Ewoks: The Battle for Endor and were shown in both The Clone Wars and Rebels tv series.

In the very next scene, we see Trandoshans, which originated with Bossk in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.

We see the Mandalorian's blaster rifle, which was inspired by Boba Fett's blaster rifle from Star Wars Holiday Special.

We see carbonite freezing, first introduced in The Empire Strikes Back. We even see a gonk droid that was first seen in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Next, the trailer shows an HMP Separatist Gunship and B2 Battle droids, bringing the prequel saga into play.

This trailer helps the entirety of Star Wars feel more cohesive and inclusive to all the things that have been seen or read up to this point.

Conjecture

Leading up to this, very little has been known about The Mandalorian. Viewing this trailer reveals little more than has already been given. The titular character is heavily influenced by the classic western films. He seems to bring a confidence reminiscent of John Wayne and a deadly presence similar to Clint Eastwood.

The trailer revealed more shots featuring characters that have been referenced such as Cara Dune, Greef Carga, and Moff Gideon. Despite seeing more of these characters, we are still left mostly in the dark about their role in the story. We do, however, see Cara Dune and the Mandalorian interacting in a friendly manner and Greef Carga awaiting the Mandalorian's ship with a team of individuals. These, at the very least, lend an aesthetic for what the dynamic between these characters may be.

Last Words

The Mandalorian has received very little promotion in the form of trailers and posters when compared to other Star Wars projects such as The Rise of Skywalker. While it definitely leaves many starving for information, I believe that it has ramped up the excitement for this project. The creators have spoken fondly of this series and are evidently putting great care and thought into its success. November 12 is arriving shortly and I believe that when individuals are asked what they think of The Mandalorian, they will reply with a confident, "Yeah? Good."
