Because we apparently need these, now.
I'm not a fan of pre-orders for readily available triple-A video games. Just throwing that out there. Jedi: Fallen Order, however, has shown a remarkable level of restraint compared to some of its peers in the game industry (mostly, I suspect, so EA can avoid more controversy).
With only a handful of pre-order bonuses, two editions, and very little in terms of retailer-exclusive content, I'm having a hard time finding the energy to be snide about the game's release strategy. EA has even elected to release the title on Steam, rather than restrict it to their Origin storefront, so that's nice.
Here's a quick rundown of all pre-order bonuses for Fallen Order for those that will want to put their order in early as well as bundles and deals that will be available on release.
Standard Edition - $59.99
Pre-ordering the standard edition of Fallen Order will net you a few cosmetic items. Cal's droid and ship will receive an optional gold coat of paint and his lightsaber will get a few options. The orange lightsaber blade will allow for a nice change of pace and the additional hilts are both quite lovely.
Curiously, the hilts are named after planets visited during the Clone Wars. Mygeeto, seen in Episode III, is where Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi met his end at the hands of his own clone troopers, the 21st Nova Corps. Umbara was first seen in the Clone Wars animated series and was the site of a massacre when Jedi Pong Krell turned against his troops.
What significance these names have is unknown. Given that Cal will likely still be dealing with the horror of Order 66 and the Clone Wars in general, there may be some kind of story reason behind the naming scheme.
Deluxe Edition - $69.99
Pre-ordering the deluxe edition will give you everything you would get for pre-ordering the standard edition, plus a few more bells and whistles for the extra ten bucks.
You'll get an extra skin for BD-1 and for the Mantis, this time in a very nice crimson. The deluxe edition also comes with a digital art book for the game and behind the scenes videos about various aspects of the game's production.
Black Series Figure Bundle (GameStop Exclusive) - $82.98
I don't know much about this one, but that's ok, because neither does GameStop. This pre-order bundle is set to include the standard edition of the game and a 6" Black Series figure.
What is the figure, you ask? I have no clue. The GameStop site doesn't list what the specific figure is, nor does it show any kind of image, instead displaying a generic "image missing" message.
Speculation based on the confirmed Fallen Order figures we are getting and information found on Star Wars collectibles site, Yakface, it seems likely to be a Purge Trooper figure. I would recommend avoiding this one until we get concrete confirmation on the figure.
Console Bundles - $299.99 - $499.99
If you haven't invested in an Xbox One, there will also be two bundles that include a console and the deluxe edition of the game. Available through GameStop and Microsoft's online store, you get the white X Box One S bundle for $299.99 or the black X Box One X bundle for $499.99
If you're interested in pre-ordering either the standard or deluxe edition, you can go through the usual suspects of Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop, and Steam. You can also go directly through EA's website.
Best Buy: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/star-wars-jedi-fallen-order-playstation-4/6340414.p?skuId=6340414
There are certainly some good deals to be had, but I would recommend caution for the Black Series bundle until we get more information. While I generally don't like pre-ordering triple-A games, EA giving out a few small cosmetics is hardly a major offense and extra customization is always a good things for folks who will want to pre-order the title.
While my personal recommendation is always to wait for reviews, I'm still hoping that we're in for an incredible journey when Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order launches on November 15th 2019.
